Picasa Albums are Gone – Malaysia Photos too

You may  (or may not) have noticed that I have not uploaded any pictures from our Malaysia vacation. I have been using Google’s Picasa Albums feature to post those pictures, and adding a link in the sidebar. That way, I wasn’t forcing the photos on you, but if you were interested, you could click on the link and browse through them.

A little while ago, I was just checking the site, and when I went to the link for my albums, the quality of the photos was terrible. Concerned, I investigated why and discovered that Google was discontinuing Picasa and Picasa Albums. So, all of my photos were moved to Google Photos, at a less than optimal resolution. Google wants me to use the Google Photos application now. But, it is not nearly as friendly as the old Picasa Web Albums was. Before, I could create an album on my PC, add captions and annotations, and upload the album. With Google Photos, I have to just put my photos in a folder, and synch using Google Drive. Then Google Photos thinks it knows how I want to see my photos, better than I do. Ahh, technology!!!

Perhaps if I had not been taking photos since I was 8, and have been an amateur photographer all my adult life, and have already developed an archiving and file structure system to save my photos (not a great one, but one that works for me), I would be willing to let Google do the job. But I’m old and crotchety and set in my ways and want to do it myself. Sadly, any replacement will cost $$$, something I was trying to avoid by using Google. So for now, my Malaysia photos will not be linked, you’ll have to make do with the few I have posted and my Instagram photos.
